Back, Like a Bad Habit

Did you miss me? Sorry I’ve been gone so long. Just typical stuff holding me up- vacations, catching up with old friends, a few breakups, work, wedding stuff, court dates, cop calls, new seasons of Gossip Girl and 30 Rock (just in case I needed more dramaz) and of course, some good shopping and eating. All is well though and I have plenty of new material for you all.

With that said, here are the top 10 things I’m excited about this summer:

1. Festivals and Street Fairs. Think about it: Vintage Virginia, Crafty Bastards, Adams Morgan Day, outdoor film fests, jazz fest. Each weekend a different metro stop seems to be having some sort of outdoor event with something fried or on a stick and if you lucky, something fried and on a stick.

2. New Season=New Clothes. Need I say more?

3. Redecorating. It seems like an odd time to redecorate (although I’m not sure what’s a good time, but new roommates mean new furniture and plus it’s always nice to change up your scenery. And yes, there will be a house warming.

4. Summer Food and Entertainment. Wolf trap, jazz at the sculpture garden, outdoor seating. I love it!

5. Three Holidays. One of these, 4th of July, happens to be my favorite of all holidays but I’m always happy for time off.

6. Mini Road-trips. Although most of these trips involve express buses to NYC and Philly,

7. Summer Blockbusters. Sex in the City and Indian Jones 4 will be getting my $9.50.

8. Summer Lovin’. There’s always one and every year one of you tries to drag it out past Labor Day and you’re kicking yourself come Halloween.

9. Virginia Beach Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon. This event is otherwise know as my reason not to overindulge at the BBQs all summer long.

10. Restaurant Week. Even though RW is well after Labor Day, for me it marks the official end of summer- i.e. the tourist are gone and Congress is in session.

Whew, I’m tired and we haven’t even begun!

Distance Makes the Heart Grow Fonder

…and right now I need about 2840 miles of fondness. HOWEVER there will be new and exciting things to report on upon my return so stay tuned. While I’m out and about you should consider:

-Attending the mixology classes at Mie N Yu offered by Professionals in the City

-Seeing the Capitals plays

-Watching UNC beat Kansas

-Attending the Hirshhorn After Hours (quite possibly THE most stylish event ive ever been to in DC!!- $10 people)

-Signing up for the Cherry Blossom Cruise up the Potomac (see Professionals in the City) AND the Cherry Blossom 10-miler (best wishes to everyone who is running the race)

-Visiting the Sartorialist Exhibit because by now the crowd has died down

-Dragging into H&R block- because really, how long can you [read: I] put taxes off…

Urban Trifecta- Because You Can’t Have It All

So legend has it that if you live in an urban area, things in your life can never be perfect. The universe is always tugging at one part and fulfilling another. This event is known as the Curse of the Urban Trifecta (CUT). The CUT simply states that when faced with home life, relationship or job, only two of the three areas can ever be fulfilled. Take for example my situation. I recently had my landlord agree to my sublease (improvement at home) and a guy that I thought had dropped off the face of the earth finally got back to me AND with a valid excuse but as a result, I did not get the project at work that I wanted. Sure, it is very possible that I ignore the false postives and I’m oblivious to times when all three areas of my life are harmonious, but I think the CUT is true- you can’t have it all.

I’ve spent the last few days looking for a place to live. Everyone (hopefully) reaches an age where they longer really need to live with another person. For me that day is about a year overdue and I’m scratching my eyes out to find another place to live. After finding myself in a heated passive agressive arugument over the placement of towels on the towel rack, yep you read that correctly, I’ve determined that it’s time to cut my losses (and break my lease) and move on.

Unfortunately, DC probably has one of the worst rental markets out there. Much of the affordable housing is snatched up by students at one of 10+ colleges in the area and it means that turnover only happens around the beginning/end of semesters. Last year I was hoping that by the time this year rolled around I would be able to split the rent of my 900 sq downtown, newly renovated apartment with my uber cute, execessively rich and overly generous boyfriend. It seems I’ve fallen short of that goal, soooo, the house hunt is on.

Everywhere I go now, I find myself on the lookout for a new humble abode. I was on a date the other day and almost stopped to take down the number of a place that was circa the guy’s block. Sure, I knew it’d be slightly awkward running into him again when things didn’t work out and I happened to live one block over, but this is about realestate people!

In an effort to look like a respectable renter, I always try and look my best when looking at a place, but not overly dressed. Here are a few of my favorite business casual outfits for looking at an apartment. Enjoy and let me know if you hear of an opening….

After having cancelled my mini-vacation for President’s Day Weekend at the last minute, I spent the rest of the weekend checking the warm temperatures online that I wasn’t enjoying. I decided not to go on vacation for a myriad of reasons, one being that I was not “prepared” to go away for the weekend. There were no clean clothes to pack, no cute “going out” outfits purchased, and no mini toiletries to fill my cosmetic bad. Missing out on this weekend definitely sparked my wanderlust and in an effort to not miss another opportunity to lounge by the pool or take way too many photos, I’m planning my next vacay well in advance. Unfortunately, I don’t have the sponsorship to take a lavish vacation nor do I have Jumper like abilities to teleport anywhere that I choose. However, my recent flight cancellation brought my travel voucher count up to THREE, allowing me to do some serious vacation planning and consequentially, some serious pre-vacation shopping. Here are just few items that made my top priority for my future travels:

1.) Mid-sized luggage. I have the über gigantic “study aboardesque” suitcase that allows you to pack at least two months worth of clothes inside of it and I have the “weekend wheeler” carry-on, but nothing for a “5 days, 4 nights” trip.

2.) Blindfold and Bose Noise Cancelling headphones. While some of you may not consider these two items “essentials” for those you that are also always seated near the unruly child, the loudest keyboard typist ever, and the cell phone chatterbox, these items are imperative for maintaining ones sanity.

3.) Backup charger(s). Measuring in at the size of a lipstick, this handy gadget works on most cell phones and on iPods. Now you won’t have to worry about leaving your charger at the hotel or having your cell/iPod run out of juice because you forgot to bring a socket converter. The charger and the appropriate end pieces can be purchased at www.brookstone.com for a grand total of $30.

4.) Luggage tags. I learned the hard way that eventually everyone is a victim of having his or her luggage lost. Tag it! Plus cute tags help you spot your luggage in the sea of bags.

5.) Travel partner. Although I haven’t checked my messages yet, something tells me that Hayden Christensen will not be asking me to go Italy any time soon. Therefore, I’m forced to find someone that can travel with me and still have our friendship intact by the time our plane touches down at Reagan. Any takers?

After being down for the count for several days, I finally had some time to work on setting up the blog. Needless to say, this process has taken forever but now both the site and I are now up and running! See you in streets and hopefully online. Also, I thought I would take the liberty of including my running outfit so that my true stalkers can easily spot me.
